Colon screening kits are available for $5.00 at the Bureau County Health Department. The EZ Detect screening kit detects hidden blood in the stool. There are no diet restrictions while using the kits. The kits are sanitary. A person simply drops a test pad in the toilet bowl after a bowel movement and if excess blood is present, a blue-green color will appear. The results are immediate. One of the primary warning signals of many colorectal diseases such as bleeding ulcers, colitis, fissures, diverticulitis, bleeding hemorrhoids, colorectal cancer, and others is hidden blood in the stool. Early detection of colorectal cancer can increase the chance of survival up to 87%.
Persons 40 years of age and over and those who have a personal or family history of lower intestinal disorders, colorectal cancer, or other cancers, should have the test yearly or as often as the doctor recommends. This screening is not a substitute for a regular physical and rectal examination by your physician, but it may indicate the need for one.
